Notes From New York
Julie Atherton

Julie trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, following which she made her West End debut in the lead role of Sophie in Mamma Mia!.

She then played the part of Serena in the national tour of Fame, a role she subsequently reprised for a Christmas season at the Edinburgh Playhouse and in the West End. Her other theatre credits include: Fern in Charlotte’s Web at the Polka Theatre; Iris Bentley in Let Him Have Justice (which she also co-wrote) at the Cochrane Theatre; the Kolokolo Bird in Just So and Minerva in Out of This World, both at the Chichester Festival Theatre; Little by Little at the Arts Theatre; and Euro Pride and Night of 1000 Voices, both at the Royal Albert Hall. Her workshop credits include: AJ in Loveshack; Sindy in Apocalypse Wow; Darlene in Raindogs and a workshop with Peepolykus at the National Theatre.

As a founder member of the Notes from New York company she has headlined shows at the Donmar Warehouse, the Arts Theatre and the Trafalgar Studios, as well as Not(es) from New York, a British edition of the series at the Duchess Theatre, Notes in Heels, back at the Duchess Theatre, and three instalments of Christmas in New York. She also played Cathy in the gala staging of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last 5 Years at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in celebration of the fifth anniversary of Notes from New York.

In addition to Julie’s theatre work, her TV credits include: Chrissy in Barbara (Carlton); Brainiacs (Sky One); The Royal Variety Performance at the London Coliseum (BBC 1); Children in Need (BBC 1); The Paul O’Grady Show (Channel 4); Challenge Anneka (ITV) and Britain’s Got More Talent (ITV 2). She has played various characters in Big Cook Little Cook for CBeebies Radio and I’m an Alien Beam Me Off Here (BBC Radio 7). Her album credits include: Let Him Have Justice (TER); Just So (First Night Records); Over the Rainbow (Children’s Hospices Charity Album) and most recently her solo album A Girl of Few Words.

Julie originated the lead roles of Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut in the UK premičre of Avenue Q and appeared in Once Upon a Time at the Adelphi at the Liverpool Playhouse. She performed in A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe at Her Majesty’s Theatre and appeared in Ordinary Days at the Finborough Theatre and Perfect Pitch at the Trafalgar Studios.

She is currently reprising her starring roles in Avenue Q in the West End.
